Introverts in an Extroverted Society
I am an introvert. I am absolutely full of gratitude for my introverted orientation to life. That has not always been the case. During my youth, adolescent years, and young adulthood and into midlife I often felt there was something wrong with me. I did not fit. Frequently, I was, overwhelmed by the energy, noise and group activities.
Reflecting on my life I recognize that, unconsciously, I honored my introverted preference. Life circumstances created a life of one being alone. A broken home, no siblings, no one to greet me with milk and cookies after school I was left to self-nurturing. Thus began my life long journey of seeking silence and solitude. Peace and joy were created through long periods sitting in the safe and quiet confines of church. Climbing trees and fire escapes to reach roof tops to sit and observe in the stillness. Long bicycle rides and athletics provided desired physical nurturing.
In spite of my introverted nature I have been able to make reasonable contributions to society. I have manifested leadership positions during all stages and seasons of my life. Self- awareness, understanding, acceptance, knowledge and mindful personal management have been important lessons learned.
